88 Piano

Looking for a digital piano or keyboard with 88 full-sized keys? Keys that “talk back” to your fingers and have the weight of a true piano? Luckily the weighted piano manufacturers have been busy in the past few years creating such a beast. Yamaha, in my opinion, are at the top of the class when it comes to reproducing the true feel of an acoustic piano with a plastic box full of wires. I own a Yamaha P70 but am saving for the P90. I couldn’t be happier.

The criteria I used for choosing an acoustic piano replacement were:

• 88 Full-sized keys
• Weighted Keys
• Midi-capable
• Around $1000

I think every digital piano made today is midi-capable. And finding a keyboard with 88 keys isn’t that difficult either. But what I really like about the yamaha series is the graduated weighting of the keys. What this means is that when you hit a low C, the resistance is greater than one of the tinkly C’s at the top. It really feels like a piano!

However, one drawback that I’ve encountered is a slight thumping sound made by the opposite side of the keys striking the interior of the casing. It’s only noticeable to me because I live in a very quiet area and I play with a lot of force. I’m not sure if the P90 has the same “feature”.
